Resizing a root partition on Linux VM

Well, I recently learned that one of my VMs had its root partition full. The following document on the root partition was resized on that VM.

It’s not gonna be something exciting or anything special. However, I feel like I should document anyway, in case I forget on how to do that in the future, and partly due to I no longer work with these type of work as my daily job anymore.

Grow partition with growpart

During the upgrade of Fedora 38 to Fedora 39 (beta) on my main desktop, the first attempt failed due to insufficient free disk space on the root volume. After some manual intervention such as vacuuming the journald logs, I was able to perform the successful upgrade. Not that it matters, but I’m writing this blog post on the same desktop running Fedora 39 Beta.

This post is to record how I increase the root volume on my desktop with the help of a few tools such as
growpart
,
lsblk
,
resize2fs
,…etc. Like always, if you stumble on this post and want to follow along, please do not just copy and pate the commands from here and run on your system. Try to understand what each command does, if you don’t, then you definitely must not copy and pate these commands!

List Block Devices on FreeBSD

Recently, I found out that the ZFS pool on a FreeBSD is running out of space. There is no option to clean up this storage, but there are spare disks. So the next logical thing to do is to add 2 extra disks to the existing (mirror) ZFS pool.

This FreeBSD server is a virtual machine (VM), and after attaching 2 physical disks to this VM, I had difficulty identifying these disks. Well, I could guess it, but this is a production server, and I really don’t want to spend my whole weekend to setup this server from the backup. :)
